My ten plus years as a devoted therapist, my dedication to continued training plus my welcoming and non-judgmental approach will help us build a trusting relationship where you can grow. I integrate humor and honesty into sessions. By us working together you can heal, learn healthier coping skills, enrich your relationships, improve your self-worth and have confidence in your choices.

Most importantly, I believe YOU are the expert in your own life. As an OCD therapist I understand it will take patience and strategies (you don't yet have) to quiet the OCD noise and learn to hear and trust your own voice again. I have the tools and skills to teach you how to do this.

Certifications & Trainings

I am also a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP). I have years of experience in treating panic disorder, anxiety, emetophobia, health anxiety and BFRB such as trichotillomania amd dermatillomania.

When clinically appropriate I may additionally use these therapeutic modalities: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Interoceptive Exposure Therapy and Inference-CBT (I-CBT) among others to compliment ERP.

You are an individual- NOT a diagnosis- and will be treated as such. We will create a treatment plan to fit your unique goals and needs.

Member & Listed Provider

I am a proud member of the International OCD Foundation. My foundational training was from their Behavior Therapy Training Institute (BTTI). My cohort leader remains my trusted mentor.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) & Other Facts

I am often able to work with Medicaid / Oregon Health Plan (OHP) across Oregon: Umpqua Health, Eastern OR CCO, Trillium, InterCommunity and more. Ask me how!  Sadly, I am unable to bill Care Oregon: Jackson Care Connect (JCC), Health Net, or Columbia Pacific. I cannot bill Medicaid Pacific Source (OHP). I am only able to bill Pacific Source Commercial Private Insurance. Every OHP Coordinated Care Organization can be different.

When checking your private insurance benefits, know that I may be listed under my name (Jennifer Thorer) or my business name: True North Counseling LLC. While your insurance may be listed above, every individual plan is specific, and you are inevitably responsible for costs incurred during therapy. I am not able to check your benefits for you. I often only learn what your fee to me will be once I am reimbursed by your insurance, and this could be weeks after our first session. I want potential clients to be aware of what their out-of-pocket costs (copays, coinsurance, deductibles) will be before starting together. If you have any concerns regarding this- or need help navigating this, please reach out.

I can provide a Superbill to submit to your insurance plan for reimbursement upon request. Or, if you have OON benefits, I may be able to submit a bill for you, let's discuss more!

50-55 min Virtual Session: $200

I spent the first half of my career working with children and families- in an office setting, a school setting, residential settings, in the home and out in the community! I really wanted to provide ERP to children and their families; however, ERP can be challenging and doing it virtually takes a very dedicated and driven person! Overall, I decided to focus my practice on adults and teens.

However, I am open to a conversation around a Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) model of ERP for a child and their parents/caregivers. This would allow the child and family to gain a handful of valuable skills to combat OCD in a pre-determined timeframe. If you are interested in discussing more, please contact me!

I am glad you are here, and I hope we can work together! I was also trained to only do ERP in session. Since I had already been a therapist for years, I quickly realized that this wasn't working for my clients. My clients were so much more than their OCD diagnoses! They had full lives - and their OCD wanted to infiltrate every part of it possible. Generally, an ERP therapist treats the OCD symptoms and refers out for any other symptoms and diagnoses. However, most other well-meaning therapists do not know how to treat OCD effectively and can even unintentionally make OCD worse. I found this to be a challenging and frustrating cycle. Especially when I was thoroughly trained and experienced to treat my client using multiple modalities, addressing each of their diagnoses (symptoms) and concerns. Most importantly, I could do it through the lens of ERP, even if not actively practicing ERP, so that OCD wouldn't be able to continue to get its claws into things more and more.

I continue to get feedback from clients that this approach works well for them. Together we could work on such things as: relationships, PTSD, careers, parenting, ADHD, everyday stressors, depression, major life decisions, grief, frustration and the joys and successes of life.

If you have a medical provider, or psychiatrist, I will work with them, Additionally, if you do not use medication and would like to, I can help in referring out for this since I do not prescribe medication. Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) are not able to prescribe medication in Oregon. The choice to take medication is a personal one, and while I have some psycho-pharmacology training on OCD and anxiety medications and can have a discussion with you around this, you will not be pressured by me one way or another.

No, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) are not able to prescribe medication in Oregon.

I have been fortunate to have many different trainings and experiences as a therapist! For half of my career, I worked with youth and their families, which basically gave me experience working with the whole lifespan. During this time, I had extensive training in: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) and Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS).

I also worked on an EASA team, Early Assessment & Support Alliance for young people experiencing psychosis.

Then moving towards working with adults and teens I had trainings in Mindfulness, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Gottman Method Couple's Therapy.

When I became interested in OCD treatment, I became trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Since I've received additional trainings in Interoceptive Exposure Therapy and Inference-CBT.

I also have training to be a Clinical Supervisor for unlicensed professional counselors.

While I do have extensive training and experience working with those that have experienced trauma, I am not an EMDR therapist.

When I do not have availability on my caseload for a referral, I do provide case consultation for clinicians to provide insight and foundational ERP strategies.

If interested, contact me for fees and more information.
